Patrick Macnee - born 1922, British actor. In the late 1940s and 50s he was a jobbing actor playing small parts in film and on stage in Britain and Canada. But he came to fame with the role Steed in the hugely popular TV series The Avengers which ran 1961-69, and later The New Avengers 1976-77. He famously refused to let his character carry a gun, so any guns were carried by a succession of female sidekicks.
